For over 10 years, Julius Deutschbauer has collected hundreds of books, all of which have a single characteristic in common: their owners would have liked to have read them, but never fulfilled their good intentions. Shown as part of Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious, The Library of Unread Books explores the idea that today the number of books that are not read far exceeds the number that are.

The Print Center invites you to add your unread book to our growing collection. Just add it to our bookcase on the second floor and fill out the survey provided. At the end of the exhibition, the Library will travel to the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York City.

In addition, Deutschbauer will be in residence at The Print Center from April 6 - 11 interviewing participants about their unread book. Please contact John Caperton, Curator at 215-735-6090 x3 or jcaperton@printcenter.org if you would like to schedule an interview with the artist.

OUT OF PLACE: CLAY AND CONTEXT, is one of 95 exhibitions that are part of INDEPENDENCE: The 44TH Annual National Council On Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference is taking place in Philadelphia, from March 31 – April 3, 2010. Opening Reception will be held on: THURSDAY, APRIL1ST from 6:30 to 9:30pm.

Nine clay artists work in Chester County, Pennsylvania, an area rich in pot making tradition. From the 18th and 19th Century, our county was home to over 100 potteries producing Quaker stoneware, majolica, and slipware from the German tradition. Our exhibition will underscore that contemporary forces in the larger world alter the shape of Regionalism. As individual artists, each of us is driven by a personal vision informed by the expansive accessibility of information and experience in contemporary culture. What we share as Chester County potters is a fertile region which filters our experiences through the vibrant energy of its rolling and gentle hills.

Artists: Susan Bankert, Paul Bernhardt, Nell Hazinski, Lyla Kaplan, Carla Lombardi, Lisa Muller, Joyce Nagata, Dale Shuffler, Jeanie Silver.

OUT OF PLACE: CLAY AND CONTEXT, is among the Concurrent Exhibitions (CIE’s) scheduled as part of the conference. CIE’s are professionally juried exhibitions selected from a vast array of proposals submitted by NCECA’ s membership.
“There is no such thing as a freestanding work of art. Each work is bracketed by: 1) everything that came before it, and 2) the next blank canvas. Between the two is the grand gulf that excites artists and collectors alike. My paintings emerge almost exclusively from the natural environment. Textures – organic, synthetic, and imaginary – are an important part of the composition, and are natural outgrowths of the subject matter. duron

As many of you probably know, 5 March 2010 is first Friday in Old City, Philadelphia. The galleries are abuzz setting up for tonight. Today’s forecast calls for a beautiful evening, but dress up warmly (in layers). It’s going to be a romantic cuddle-up evening. Before you stroll off into the galleries, I’d like to shamelessly direct you to Old City Cheese Shop on 160 N. 3rd Street where some of my paintings are on display salon style.

Well, if not for the paintings, you’ll certainly enjoy a light and casual dinner in this quaint little place in Old City. Can you tell I’m very partial to Old City Cheese Shop? I’m just crackers for cheese.

Anyway, it’s going to be a beautiful evening. Come on out and enjoy it with friends and family!

Cheers!
